    Hi Nasim,

I loved your site, its simplicity and accuracy. I own a Nikon D70 and I’m thinking of upgrading to D7000 but for the moment I want to invest on good (or at least affordable) lenses.

I’m a bit confused and I want your view between the 3 below lenses:

SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM
Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD
    AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR

The Tamron provides f2.8 so it allows me to shoot in lower light (and this is the most important for me)
The nikkon gives only 3,5 but its VR
The SIGMA has both but after a bad bad bad bought of the SIGMA 70-300 (no stabilizer) i’m reluctant to trust this brand

Your opinion would be much appreciated

Hi, I am also in the same situation, I had a Nikon D70s upgrading to D7000. I was also after a standard zoom lens. Could you please advice which one would be best for this DX format SLR

Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 HSM OS (all with image stabilizer).
      Nikon 16-85mm 3.5-5.6 VR ?
      tamron 17-50mm 2.8 VC (fixed)?

      Many. Thanks

    Hi guys,

After a really thorough research I end up to porceed with Tamron 17-50 2.8 non-VC version. Mainly for the below reasons:

    1. My d70 kit lens was already a 18-70 3.5, therefore there was no need to buy another f3.5 nikon so I exclude nikon 16-85 from the list

    2. Sigma maintens the 2.8 only in 17-20mm On 35mm gets f3.5 also, so I excluded it.

    3. the remainders were Sigma 18-50 2.8 (which is expensive), Tamron 28-70 2.8 (I’m missing the wide 17-28 here) and Tamron 17-50 2.8 non-vc (which is better than the VC version)

Between Sigma 18-50 & Tamron 17-50 I decided to go with the Tammy just for being less expensive and I can use the 67mm filters. I have read a lot on line these days and both are considered magnificent alternative lenses
