Nasim, I’m a new follower of your blog. :P
I took up photography not long ago and i think i really like it right now. I’m interested in getting the 24-70mm f/2.8G. I’m looking for a lens which is good for travel, event and portrait, and can take nice landscapes but not to the extend of specializing in landscape photography. Do you think this lens is a right lens for me?
I’m quite attracted to the features of the new 16-35mm f/4 especially the VR. this makes we wonder whether i should get the 24-70mm or the 16-35mm. is VR really a big deal?
This is my first lens other than the kit. I hope to make a good investment on it. By the way, I’m currently a D5000 user (will upgrade my camera soon). Looking forward for your prompt reply.
Stephen, thank you for following our blog!
I think for your situation, the Nikon 16-35mm f/4 VR would be a better choice for two reasons:
1) Nikon 24-70mm is equivalent of a 36-105mm lens on your D5000 (DX sensor), which is a little too long for landscape photography.
2) Nikon 16-35mm would be equivalent of 24-53mm, which is a good range to work with on DX. It is also super sharp in the center.
The Nikon 24-70mm is really not a portrait lens. What I would do if I were you, is get the following:
1) Nikon 16-35mm f/4.0 VR
2) Nikon 50mm f/1.4G
The first lens will be your primary lens for everyday photography and landscapes, while the second one will be your portrait lens that will produce images with beautiful bokeh. Both lenses work on FX sensors, so if you upgrade to a full-frame camera in the future, you don’t have to worry about upgrading lenses.
Also, the links that I gave you above are from B&H – they have the best pricing when it comes to Nikon gear. Adorama is the second best for me. Don’t buy from websites that sell lenses cheaper than the above two, because they will end up being scammers.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
Nasim, thx alot. A very good suggestion. You’ve ‘enlightened’ me :)
By the way, what are the main uses of the 24-70mm if used on a FX as well as on a DX body?
Stephen, sorry for a late response, my schedule has been hectic…
Well, the lens works perfectly well on both, but might seem a little too long on DX due to crop factor.
