While driving home for lunch, I noticed a coyote walking around the pond that is right across from where I work. After lunch, I grabbed my camera, hoping the coyote was still around. I looked around and the guy was still there! I quickly went back to the car, got my monopod and started walking slowly towards the coyote. This guy was completely unafraid and did not seem to care that I was there (I was standing about 15-20 meters away from him). He looked at me a few times, but didn’t get bothered, since I was not moving.
After about a minute or two, he got up:

Then, he stretched like a cat and started getting ready for dinner:

The next 10 minutes were boring, as he was just walking around the pond, eating some grass. Then, all of a sudden, he spotted something:

He slowly moved towards the prey, but it started running, so he charged right after. The rodent ran into a hole. I had no idea coyotes could dig! At one point, he got so deep into the ground, that you could only see half of the body.

Then, voila – the rodent is caught:

I thought it was a mouse, but it was big and fat, so I’m not so sure…either way the poor guy suffered a painful death. The coyote chewed him left and right, crushing the bones.

Then he carried the corpse to the middle of the field and buried it. I guess he wasn’t hungry and wanted to save some food for later…
