Computer Problems

I apologize for not being able to post for a while, but our main PC that has all the images is down at the moment and I am still waiting for replacement parts to arrive to get us going again. For some strange reason, the amount of RAM was showing up as 6 GB instead of 12 GB on the PC I recently built, occasionally increasing and decreasing in size. It was certainly bad RAM and I had to send it back to the manufacturer for replacement. As soon as the memory arrives, I will start posting more – I have lots of great new articles coming up and pictures to share. August has been a very busy month for both Lola and I, so we are doing our best to keep everything organized. I keep wishing that there were more than 24 hours in a day!

I am also anxiously waiting for B&H to ship the new lenses and the Nikon D3100 to me for testing.

The Nikon 35mm f/1.8G is a beautiful lens – even my two sons like it :) More to come!

very nice pic of kids. no need to mention your excellent articles.

However I feel so sad when people ask you same question again and again without browsing & reading your site.

Thank you Vineet! Yes, it happens quite a bit…I think I will stop responding to those soon. Comments take more time to respond to than writing articles! Today I responded to over 300 comments and spent like 5-6 hours.

Wow what an incredible pic! I love reading your website, it’s very inspiring and has so much great information.
Good luck with your RAM problem.

  4. It’s not always the RAM that’s the problem; sometimes it’s the motherboard, the BIOS version, or even the CPU/RAM timings set in the BIOS. What computer/motherboard is it?

Aaron, yes, I know that it could be anything. But I have tried everything and I knew that the problem was with the RAM, since no settings or changes in hardware would address the problem. Now I’m back in track, with full 12 GB of RAM :) This machine is flying…

I built the PC from different parts and here are the specs:
      Case – Antec
      Mobo – Gigabyte ga-x58a-ud3r
CPU – Intel Core i7 2.66Ghz running at 3+ Ghz (overclocked)
      Heatsink – Megahalems
RAM – 12 GB triple channel memory
HDD – Intel SSD, 150GB + 2x1TB drives in RAID0 configuration for photos + 2GB external HDD for backup
Video Card – NVidia GeForce GTS 250
Blue Ray Drive burner and some other accessories like memory card reader, etc.

      • Very nice Nasim! That should fly for you, especially with an Intel SSD! I love those things and will never go back to hard drives for my system drive. I’m building a new laptop this week and I spent the little extra to put an Intel SSD in it. I also like Antec cases. I build/service computers for a living and they have proven to be a very good manufacturer. Which case did you go with? I built a Core i7 workstation last year that is my primary machine, but I went with the cheaper dual-channel P55 chipset (Lynnfield CPU) instead of your triple channel (Bloomfield), so I can’t affordably go over 8GB of RAM. It’s still blistering fast and makes for a fine editing machine:

        Antec P193
PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool 860 Power Supply
        Intel DP55KG Motherboard, P55 chipset
        Intel Core i7 860, 2.8GHz
        8GB DDR3 (4x2GB) G Skill F3-10666CL7-2GBRH running at 1333MHz, 9-9-9-24, 1.5v
        2x Intel X25-M 80GB Gen2 SSDs striped (RAID 0)
        2x Seagate Barracuda ES.2 1TB 7200rpm 32MB Cache striped (RAID 0)
2x Seagate Barracuda XT 2TB 7200rpm 64MB Cache as backup eSATA drives
        Plextor PX-880SA DVD Burner
        Plextor PX-940SA BluRay Burner
XFX ATI Radeon HD 5870, 1GB, triple head
        3x 19″ ViewSonic VX-900 (3840×1024)

Most probably this is the RAM. Let us know what was the problem when you fix it!
Wonderful picture of your sons! The lens definitely doing a good job. Photographer too ;)

Bakhtiyor, yes, it was indeed RAM that was faulty. Replaced all 6 sticks and now I have 12 GB in triple channel mode! :)

      Thank you for your feedback!

  6. It is good to see you posting again. I have been waiting for your post. I a got so worried when you stop posting in your blog. Those two cute boys are so cute. They look so great together.

Hi, it happened to me too when I added an additional RAM module to my Dell laptop. The problem was that I didn’t push the RAM module into the socket enough. I had to open the laptop again and push it harder into the socket and then it worked.

    wow! what a wonderful photo:)
    i have nikon d3100
i just wanna asked how to achieved this one?

    • Wendy, it is just evening light with a good lens – the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G. You can use it on your D3100 and it works much better than the kit 18-5mm for portraits.
