Pinterest – Copyright Infringement Made Cool?

To start out on a positive note, let me say that I think the story of Pinterest is inspiring. It is tempting to believe that many of the simpler ideas associated with innovation have been thought of, and only very complex, time consuming, expensive initiatives can break new ground. Along comes Pinterest, offering an extremely simple idea – providing the electronic paradigm of a corkboard with photos, recipes, and other notes that people want to keep handy and visible, and giving them the opportunity to link to those of others. If anyone doubts that there is always a simple, yet powerful idea lurking around the corner, look no further than Pinterest.

Pinterest is turning out to be a great opportunity for small and large businesses to gain exposure and increase sales. Other blog and news sites, such as Mansurovs, are garnering additional traffic as a result of people pinning its articles to various photography boards. Many entrepreneurs are developing social networking and marketing strategies based on Pinterest. I believe that Facebook and Google+ are likely scrambling to emulate more of Pinterest’s capabilities, lest they find themselves being marginalized. Pinterest’s user base has exploded over the last few years, so it is clearly gaining momentum and has captured the latest buzz within the internet community.

A Little Comfort as You Anxiously Await Your D800 or D4 or 5D mk III arrival

Passage of timeAs I, like many of you, have been waiting for a new Nikon camera body to arrive, a recurring thought has come to my mind. It comes from the words of my father and it might hold a cure for what ails you if you, like me, suffer from common Diseases that Plague Photographers. Whenever I wanted something badly, but couldn’t seem to get it fast enough, he would say, “Anticipation is greater than realization”. To a young, impatient boy then and to an older, impatient man now, those words never seemed to comfort me as my father might have liked. Although never very comforting, they were very true.

We have all been there. Maybe it was that new bike that seemed to take forever to save for. Perhaps it was your dream car that required you spend all of your free time working that extra job. Whatever you were hoping for, the anticipation and build up prior to acquiring it was likely much more exciting than actually getting the item. Who can’t identify with the new car owner that seems less excited about his/her new car after the first car payment comes due? And golfers are notorious for claiming to experience longer drives, straighter iron shots, and more holed putts after changing clubs. Interestingly, their new clubs lose their “magic” after a month and start behaving very similar to their old clubs.

I am sure my father was trying to get me to enjoy the wait and learn a bit of patience. Perhaps he was always hoping that if enough time would pass, my insatiable need to spend my money on some new flashy item would dissipate. Although very wise, dad’s tactics in this area often had less than the desired effects on his not so bright son. You may experience better luck with your kids or yourself. So I pass the lesson on to you. As for me [doorbell chime], I gotta go see what is in the B&H box that just arrived. Maybe if I am lucky, it was me that got Bob’s D800 this time. Enjoy the anticipation as you wait!

D800 to Cause Nikon’s Stock Price to Drop?

Nikon executives have been pacing the floor today as they expect a huge drop – perhaps as much as 20-35% – in the company’s share price at the market’s opening bell. Over the weekend, Nikon frantically attempted to reassure some of its largest investors and retail partners there was no reason to panic. What happened? By all respects, Nikon has been on a roll with the D800 and D4 model introductions. Most experts have attributed Nikon with hitting it out of the park. The issue uncovered this weekend, however, is that the D800 is actually much better than originally thought or reported thus far. Surprise, surprise… the D800 is actually capable of an effective resolution of 108MP!

Conveniently left out of the original product marketing material and technical details, was the fact that the D800’s sensor has a substrate capable of capturing additional detail. When combined with sophisticated interpolation software (also not revealed to the public), it is able to triple the camera’s resolution. No doubt this newly discovered feature will lead to increased D800 sales. But the more troubling concern is the potential impact on the sales of Nikon lenses. When a photographer can take pictures with a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, and is able to obtain high resolution crops similar to what a 105mm macro, 300mm, or 200-400mm lens can produce, why purchase additional lenses?

Turbo Mode

This capability, affectionately known within the Nikon Engineering ranks, as “turbo mode”, was apparently going to be introduced in approximately six to nine months. D800 owners would have been able to activate it after paying an additional $750. This would have marked the first time a camera manufacturer charged a fee for activating a feature after the camera had been shipped from the factory. Nikon customers would have been required to purchase a software key unique to their camera to enable this feature, so as to prevent people from sharing the code. But one of the Nikon engineers accidently stumbled upon a menu and button sequence that enabled this capability, thus bypassing the need for an activation code. In the software industry, such capabilities are often purposely inserted into the code. They are known as “Easter eggs”, since they require a bit of hunting to find. Most of the time, they are rather innocuous and simply result in a humorous message flashing onto the user’s screen. In computer games, Easter eggs may reveal some additional options not available in the menu. Nikon’s Easter egg, however, unlocks a significant capability – one that it was counting on for additional revenue. As with most modern day secrets, once the menu and button sequence was discovered, it went viral on the internet. Although we have yet to see the substrate and interpolation software engineering specifications, we can say that the initial test results are nothing short of jaw-dropping!

Getting Yourself Out There

I have met a lot of great people. Many of them, while being truly brilliant at something, have a hard time understanding their potential. It is sad to see them just drift away wherever life takes them and not take a step of their own. Are you like that? Do you ever stop yourself from going out, meeting people, starting photography or videography projects? While no one can change that but you, I think a little bit of inspiration can go a long way.

This is a short film by three student, who, as they say, did not care about nature, and then decided to do something about it. And they did. While the attention this project received is quite amazing – their website has been visited by over 900 thousand people already – it’s not even the idea that I found most inspiring. This film was made by three students, and while I am quite certain they did not have a million dollar budget, they sure found a way to unleash their creativity, something we all have an unlimited amount of. Do you still think there is something you cannot do?

Get out there. Take your camera and shoot. Make a film. Stop drifting, stop wasting your time. Stop thinking you can’t. Not tomorrow, not in a year – now, whatever it is, whatever you dream about.

There is no better way of doing what you love than simply doing what you love.

Please Welcome our New Team!

During the last 3 weeks, you might have already seen their great articles, you may have already exchanged comments with them or even visited their websites and portfolios. Today, I would like to officially welcome our new team members that will be contributing to the growth and success of our site. From the day we became “The Mansurovs” back in 2009 and since we started posting photography-related content, our site has grown from nothing to over 1.5 million monthly visitors today. While we are excited about this kind of rapid growth, Lola and I realized that we want to take the website to a whole new level and make it a much bigger and friendlier place for photographers of all levels. We also realized that it would be impossible to do all this by ourselves, so we invited a couple of our friends and readers to become a part of the Mansurovs team. Please welcome Bob Vishneski, Tom Redd and Romanas Naryškin!

The National Cherry Blossom Festival

DC is now awash with stunning displays of color and beauty, as the city’s famous cherry blossom, magnolia, and other flowering trees burst into full bloom. The cherry blossoms are so numerous that when the petals begin to fall, they resemble large snowflakes gently gliding onto people’s hair and clothing, and transform the ground into a beautiful sea of white and pink. To celebrate this beauty and the welcoming of spring, DC hosts the National Cherry Blossom Festival, running from March 20th through April 27th. 2012 represents the 100th anniversary of Japan’s gift of the original two-thousand cherry blossom trees, so the event coordinators have ratcheted up the festivities for this historic milestone.

National Cherry Blossom Festival

The National Cherry Blossom Festival is one of DC’s largest, oldest, and most colorful events, and attracts visitors from around the globe. It includes an extensive agenda of cultural activities including: parades, shows, exhibits, museum tours, culinary treats, concerts, fireworks displays, and films. For photographers, the festival offers a virtually limitless opportunity to take breathtaking photographs of the flowering trees against the backdrop of DC’s historical memorials and monuments, as well as the many other colorful displays of pageantry. In an effort to expand the awareness and popularity of the event, the National Cherry Blossom Festival strongly encourages visitors to take photos and share them with others around the globe. They also sponsor a number of different photography contests.

If you are within reasonable driving distance of DC, I strongly recommend spending a long weekend in the area. If you are a plane ride away, consider planning a trip to DC sometime in the future. You are sure to have wonderful time, be touched by the outstanding display of nature’s beauty, and capture some memorable photos. You can read more about this amazing event at the website link above. They also have iPhone and Android smartphone applications that can help guide you through the festival’s extensive calendar of events.

Canon 5D Mark III Coverage

Just wanted to let our readers know that I will be covering the Canon 5D Mark III release, similar to how I covered the Nikon D800 launch. So far I have only been covering Nikon and Sony products (more Sony camera and lens reviews on the way), but going forward, I will also be covering Canon DSLRs and lenses. I have been working on some big site-related projects lately and I will be posting some announcements later this month.

Does this Canon 5D Mark III coverage mean that I will be reviewing the upcoming Canon 5D Mark III? You betcha! While my primary focus will still remain Nikon DSLRs and lenses (hey, I am a Nikon shooter after-all!), I decided that I need to expand my scope to the competition. One of the biggest complaints that I get from many of our readers is that I only cover Nikon and it turns out that many of our readers shoot Canon. Hopefully this news will make our Canonite group happy!
