New Blog Subscription Option

As you might have noticed, I have recently added a new option for email subscription to our blog via a widget on the right side of the page. It is different from the email subscription option shown in our “Subscription” page, where it is fully managed by the Google Feedburner platform. This one is managed by WordPress.com and it provides many options for subscribing to new posts and updates – you can choose to receive emails the moment I post something (unlike Google Feedburner that sends notifications once a day early in the morning) or you can schedule email updates as often as you would like (once a week, etc).

You can find the new subscription widget on the right side of the page as shown below:

Please let me know if you have any questions and happy holidays!

Our Site RSS Feeds

Many of our readers have been emailing me about their inability to see the content of next pages in RSS feeds when a large review article is split into multiple pages. I struggled with this issue for a while and ended up changing the RSS feed to only display an excerpt rather than a full article, with a link to read the article just because of this. After I implemented this a couple of weeks ago, I received even more complaints from our readers, asking to get full posts in the RSS feed like before. Today, I am happy to announce that I found a solution to this problem and I was able to fix the multiple page RSS issue, so all of our subscribers will be receiving full posts over RSS/email, even when they are split into multiple pages.

Nikon 1, Olympus and Sony Testing

I think I got myself into a lot of mess! I don’t even know where to start with all this stuff:

Nikon 1 Sony and Olympus

From bottom left to right:

  1. Olympus E-PL3 with 14-24mm kit lens
  2. Nikon 1 J1 with 10-30mm / 30-110mm kit lenses
  3. Nikon 1 V1 with 10mm / 10-30mm kit lenses
  4. Sony NEX-5n with 18-55mm kit lens
  5. Nikon 1 Nikkor 10-100mm lens
  6. Sony Zeiss 85mm f/1.4
  7. Sony A65 DSLR
  8. Sony 50mm f/1.4
  9. Sony Zeiss 16-80mm
  10. Sony A77 DSLR with 16-50mm kit lens

It is painful to even look at this picture…

Nikon 1 Camera System Announcement

Nikon has just announced the Nikon 1 Camera System with two brand new mirrorless cameras: Nikon V1 and Nikon J1. While talks about a new mirrorless system from Nikon have been all over the Internet for quite some time now, the mirrorless camera system is now a reality. The camera system specs and image samples from the J1 are impressive, but is it revolutionary as Nikon claims it to be? I don’t think so. In fact, if the product line is not managed well, I believe it can actually hurt the company in the long run.

Nikon J1

Why do I believe that? Because it is another product line that Nikon will be spending R&D time + money on creating lenses and accessories for, which might eat away resources from R&D for DSLR cameras and lenses. If this happens, it might hurt photo pros and enthusiasts that heavily invested in Nikon’s DSLR line of products.

Given the growth of smaller advanced cameras in markets like Japan, Nikon sees a huge potential for growth in the mirrorless segment. With new mirrorless product lines from Sony, Fuji, Pentax and others, the biggest question is around sensor and mount sizes – how big should the sensor be and how bulky is the camera going to get when a lens is mounted? Sony took a unique approach when it announced its NEX mirrorless product line – it is using an APS-C size sensor (which is 23.5×15.6mm, about the same size as DSLRs like Nikon D7000) with a mount that allows using regular DSLR lenses through a converter. This is very appealing to current DSLR owners that want to have a more compact camera. So Sony has essentially produced a very compact camera with DSLR features. Nikon, on the other hand, took a very different approach – they are using a much smaller 13.2×8.8mm CMOS sensor manufactured by Nikon specifically for the Nikon 1 Camera System. The sensor difference between Nikon 1 Camera System and Sony NEX is huge and as you may already know, smaller size equals larger depth of field and potentially worse image quality (if pixel density is higher and pixels are smaller). The difference in sensor size allows Sony to cram 24 megapixels into their larger sensor on the NEX-7, while Nikon is currently stuck at 10 megapixels. Sure, pixel size is not important for most people. But it is for those of us that want to print large. It does not hurt to have more pixels.

All this puts the new Nikon 1 Camera System above its current point and shoot market and below the DSLR market. Why couldn’t Nikon just add a new point and shoot line instead of making a whole new line of cameras? Because it wanted a new compact camera with interchangeable lenses. And it did not want to allow reusing the bulky Nikkor line of lenses because it would defeat the purpose of having a compact camera.

What do you think about the new Nikon 1 Camera System? Do you see a good future for this camera? Are you going to get one?

Testing the Nikon 400mm f/2.8G VR

I got my hands on a brand new Nikon 400mm f/2.8G VR that I have been testing for the last week or so. This weekend I am heading out to Yellowstone to shoot bears, wolves and whatever else I might encounter. This should give me a pretty good idea about how the 400mm f/2.8G VR performs in various environments with and without teleconverters. Here is the Nikkor beast:

Nikon 400mm f/2.8G VR

This thing is a monster! It is heavy, bulky and comes with a nice leather case that is probably worth a lot of money. Expect a full review with sample images from Yellowstone within the next couple of weeks. The lens will be mounted primarily on the Nikon D7000 and occasionally on the Nikon D3s.

Hopefully this review will be great for those who are looking at buying a long zoom to photograph wildlife. I will compare the Nikkor 400mm f/2.8G VR against the following lenses:

  1. Nikon 300mm f/2.8G VR II
  2. Nikon 300mm f/4.0 AF-S
  3. Nikon 200-400mm f/4.0 VR

It would be awesome if I could do a comparison against the 500mm f/4 and 600mm f/4 as well, but I currently do not have access to these lenses. If anybody has a 500mm f/4 or a 600mm f/4 and can lend those to me for a day (for the sake of science, LOL), I would do a full comparison of all these lenses at once. If you are in Colorado and have the lens(es), please let me know via the “Contact Us” page. I will mention you in the review and provide a link to your blog.

Welcome to the All-New Mansurovs.com!

As you might have already noticed, our website has been significantly changed during the last two weeks. Just like I promised in my earlier post, the site has been completely reorganized and now only hosts photography-related content. All of Lola’s wedding and recipe content has been moved to Lola’s own website lola-elise.com and related content from this site has been redirected there.

The top navigation menu now includes Reviews with sub-menus to Lens Reviews and Camera Reviews, Photography Tips with sub-menus to Photography Tips for Beginners, Post-Processing Tips for Beginners and Flash Photography Tips, and the new Gear Guide. I have not yet had a chance to finish working on all new pages, but new and updated content will be added to the these pages very soon. The Gear Guide will be a new section with my recommendations for various photography needs and will have short reviews of photography equipment such as lenses, cameras, accessories, software, etc. I will be working on the Gear Guide during the next few weeks.

All categories on the sidebar have also been modified. I removed the previous categories that showed our photography work (and other personal stuff) and replaced them with new categories that primarily host photography articles and reviews. A new section called “current deals and rebates” has been added to the sidebar – I will post links to special deals and discounts there. The slider on the top of the page now features our articles and reviews, instead of Lola’s weddings. Other content is being added to the site, for the two mini-projects I am planning on launching within the next month or two.

As for Lola’s new site, it has a different design and layout than Mansurovs.com, allowing for larger photographs to showcase her work. Lola will be posting images from her photo shoots on lola-elise.com and will be cross-posting some of them here with tips on how she took photographs and then post-processed them in Ligthroom or Photoshop.

Here is a screenshot of her new website Lola-Elise.com:

I hope you like the new changes. Please let us know how you like these changes and please drop a comment about what you think of Lola’s new blog! Lola is still working on lola-elise.com and will be making a separate announcement on her blog very soon. I know she can’t wait to hear your feedback!
