The Province of Djizzak

The Jizzak Province is one of Uzbekistan's major producers of wheat and other cereals. Besides cereals they cultivate forage plants, vegetables, melons and gourds. Animal husbandry consists of cattle, sheep, goat and pig breeding. Construction materials used primarily for irrigation needs dominate industry in this area. There is also a plastic factory and cotton purification plants. The province has numerous mines for lead, zinc, iron, lime and limestone extraction. Chemical and mechanical engineering, especially electromechanical, the textile industry and agricultural production processing is growing fast in Djizak. The main goal of the mechanical engineering industry is the reconstruction and modernization of existing enterprises and to upgrade production to world standards using advanced technologies. The Province's light industry branch should update its factories that produce cotton yarn, knitted cloth, socks and stockings.

Programs to develop agricultural industry are focussing on the processing of food, vegetables and dried fruit. There is a fish processing plant with an estimated capacity 5 million tins per year. The implementation of an industrial development program until the year 2000 will require foreign investments totaling US $74,9 million. The total length of tarred roads is about 2,500 km. Numerous highways connect the Province with Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and other towns in Uzbekistan. Djizak boasts the beautiful Zaamin National Park known for its unique fauna and flora.
