President's speech to the Trade Union Conference

In his speech to the trade union conference, President Islam Karimov said in part: "The trade unions, with their millions of members, do great work to defend the social, economic, spiritual and intellectual rights of their members, to guarantee the harmony of interests in society. They are organizing their activity in accordance with the new economic demands and trying to put their program into action. The task now is to liberalize all spheres of social and political life, which puts much responsibility on the trade unions.

I am sure that the stable and fruitful relations between our state, workers and trade unions will result in the development of society on the basis of principles of social partnership. Especially important are questions of material and moral help to workers, to protect their health and provide leisure, regular control for fulfilling laws on work and collective agreements, providing training and self-direction, encouragement of initiative and innovation. I am sure that trade unions will confidently serve our people in this.
